Rita Bishop named Virginia Superintendent of the Year

ROANOKE -

Roanoke City Public Schools Superintendent Rita Bishop has been selected as this year's Virginia Superintendent of the Year.

Dr. Bishop was named at the Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS) conference at the Hotel Roanoke Tuesday night.  The State Superintendent of Public Instruction and the leaders of five Virginia educational organizations selected her from among eight regional Superintendents of the Year.   Earlier this year, Dr. Bishop was selected as Region 6 Superintendent of the Year.

"It was a great honor to be chosen to represent Region 6.  I have profound respect for the area Superintendents who chose me.  It was very humbling to be selected as State Superintendent of the Year.  Any success that I have had is the direct result of the wonderful people I work with," said Dr. Bishop.

Dr. Bishop said being named Virginia Superintendent of the Year is not just her award. This award showcases the school board, the executive team and everyone who works in the interest of children every day.

"Aside from about falling through the floor when they announced my name, I was just really honored and humbled and I felt such a responsibility to the profession" said Dr. Bishop.

She says the best part of this is that she gets to give away a $1,000 scholarship as part of the prize. She's still working on the award criteria.

"We are so very proud of Dr. Bishop.  I must admit that we are not at all surprised by her recognition, but it is long overdue and wholly appropriate," said School Board Chairman David Carson.

Dr. Bishop will now represent the Commonwealth of Virginia in the National Superintendent of the Year competition in February 2014.
