Judges may hold another NC redistricting hearing

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

The judges hearing North Carolina's redistricting litigation want more information from attorneys about the role race played in the formation of congressional and General Assembly boundaries drawn in 2011.

Three Superior Court judges met Wednesday with lawyers representing the state and legislative leaders and attorneys for voters and interest groups that sued over the maps, alleging they are unconstitutional. The judges already have received thousands of pages of documents and held two days of hearings in February.

Wake Superior Court Judge Paul Ridgeway say they're interested in issues of racial polarization where some majority-black districts were drawn and whether race was the predominant factor in forming six districts.

The questions could lead to another hearing in June before they rule on the lawsuits. Any decision likely will be appealed.
