Buchanan works to cleanup carnival grounds after flooding

BUCHANAN -

Cleanup crews are hoping water levels in the James River will continue to recede Thursday as they wait to continue work on the Buchanan Carnival Grounds.

Flooding on site delayed several repairs scheduled for this week and will require more volunteers to cleanup debris.

But organizers say they are relieved.

Carnival chairman Cleatus Newcomb said they were prepared to clear all of the carnival stands if the flood waters proved to be worse than expected.

"I was a little bit nervous when I heard about all of the water but we have lucked out here," he said. "Everything has turned out real good for us and if things hold on like they are I think we're going to be ok here."

Newcomb said the goal now is to get the carnival grounds cleaned up in time for the Relay for Life event beginning May 17.
