ROANOKE, VA -

Roanoke City Police say a 17-year-old male robbery suspect was caught by Virginia State Police in northern Virginia.

The robbery took place on Tuesday, May 7th.  A 62-year-old woman told Roanoke officers that she was at the intersection of 1st Street and Day Avenue around 1:41 p.m., when a man in a car drove up.  The woman said the young man driving got out, stole her purse, got back in the car, and drove off.  The woman added that she was knocked to the ground, and had to go to the hospital for treatment.

According to police department spokeswoman Aisha Johnson, a State Police trooper arrested the 17-year-old later that same day in Fairfax County, for driving a Chrysler Cirrus reported stolen from Roanoke.

State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the trooper found the car around 5:53 p.m. on Nutley Street, near I-66 in the Town of Vienna.  The trooper tried to get the driver to pull over, but the Chrysler sped off.  The Chrysler eventually crashed into a parked car near in the intersection of Hillcrest and Marshall Streets, the driver got out and ran off.

Police from the Town of Vienna and Fairfax County Police K-9 teams helped track the 17-year-old male to a hiding spot in nearby bushes.  Officers arrested the teen a 6:32 p.m.

During the investigation, police linked the teen to the robbery earlier in Roanoke.

Roanoke Police say the 17-year-old moved to Roanoke from Washington, D.C. in December of 2012.  He was a resident of a facility that provides treatment for troubled adolescent males.

State Police charged the teen with possession of a stolen vehicle, and eluding police.

Roanoke Police say charges are pending consultation with the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.  The teen may face additional charges, as officers investigate whether he is responsible for additional unsolved crimes.
