Cuccinelli addresses drug problem in Southwest Virginia

BOTETOURT COUNTY -

The growing drug problem in Southwest Virginia is beginning to catch the attention of legislators in Richmond.

Last week WSLS 10's Scott Leamon broke down the growing heroin problem in the area due in part to the crackdown on prescription drugs.

During a campaign stop in Botetourt County we asked Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli about the growing trend.

He said prescription drugs and methamphetamine are still Southwest Virginia's biggest issues, but he is aware of the re-emergence of heroin.

Cuccinelli said drug task forces are monitoring these situations carefully and making progress.

"It is very important to us and we know what a negative effect drugs are having in Southwest Virginia," he said. "We're trying to put a brake on that."

Cuccinelli points to the success of the prescription drug take back programs in the area.

During its most recent program in April, police in the Roanoke Valley collected more than 3,800 pounds of prescription drugs.
