ROANOKE, VA -

The Boys & Girls Club of Southwest Virginia received a technology upgrade on Friday.

Cox Communications unveiled the new technology center at the group's Southwest Roanoke 9th Street Club site on Friday.  The tech center is part of a $25,000 donation from Cox.

The donation includes

  • Ten wireless desktop computers with flat-screen monitors
  • A laser printer
  • A wireless router
  • NetSmartz software developed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to encourage safe use of the internet
  • Free high speed internet and digital cable

"We are pleased to support the deserving children of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia with funding to upgrade the Technology Center," said Kim Stanley, market vice president, Roanoke Operations for Cox Virginia in a news release.  "Having access to computers and reliable Internet service is no longer something that's simply nice to have — to excel in today's fast-paced education climate, students must have both digital literacy and consistent access to technology tools. This center is helping to make this possible for local kids who really need it."

"The Cox Technology Center at our 9th Street site is a vital part of our Club," said Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia's Chief Professional Officer Laurie Gibbons in the release.  "Many of our members do not have computers at home and the Cox Lab provides dependable, up to date computers and software for our kids to do their homework, build computer skills, and allow our staff to integrate technology into all our Core Program Areas.  Most importantly, our young people develop the technology skills necessary to succeed in school and the job market.  We are extremely grateful to Cox Communications for their generous donation and ongoing partnership to benefit the young people we serve."
