Belly dance flash mob raises money for domestic violence shelter

DOWNTOWN ROANOKE -

Today is world belly dance day and throughout the day more than 2,000 Shimmy Mob dancers across five continents moved and shaked it for domestic violence awareness, including right here at home.

This is the third annual Shimmy Mob event worldwide but we're told this is the first ever in Roanoke.

More than a dozen dancers took part in a flash mob in the City Market building this afternoon,  one of four across the Star City today.

The group says its been working on the choreography for the dance since January.

All money raised goes to the Salvation Army Turning Point, a domestic violence shelter.

"This is really important. I mean this is a huge issue that we really wanted to get behind and we're raising money around the world and it's gonna stay right here in our community" said Kerra Glover, the Shimmy Mob Team Leader.

According to the Salvation Army Turning Point, Roanoke leads the Commonwealth in domestic violence deaths.
