Y-Toss aims to keep items out of landfills

Posted: Updated:

One of the largest recycling events in Blacksburg is under way this morning. Y-Toss started eight years ago. It's the YMCA at Virginia Tech's largest sustainability initiative.

Right now, volunteers are collecting gently-used items like furniture, clothing or appliances from students who are moving out. They will sell the donations during a thrift sale in August. It helps freshman, or international students or anyone else with limited resources get affordable items but more importantly, say organizers, it keeps more items out of landfills.

"When the students are moving out we encourage them to donate their items rather than taking them to the dumpster,' said volunteer Ayla Wilk. "We've gotten to a point annually where we divert almost 25,000 pounds from the landfill."

The money raised will support the Y's student programs.

Y-Toss continues through Saturday and with students already leaving campus, more volunteers are needed. You can contact the Y to volunteer.
