Brannock's wife said she had been telling him he wasn't a coward

Mandy Brannock said she had been telling her husband, former Virginia state trooper Matt Brannock, that he wasn't a coward from day one.

Mandy Brannock said that was the first thing she remembered her husband saying to her as he lay wounded in the hospital on May 30, 2011.

Former Franklin County sheriff's deputy Jonathan Agee shot Brannock twice during his Memorial Day 2011 rampage.

"I told him, 'Honey, you did what you had to do to come back to her family,'" Mandy Brannock said she remembered telling her husband.

Matt Brannock said on the stand last week during Agee's sentencing hearing that he felt like a coward because he didn't return fire.

On the second day of the hearing, the judge in Agee's case singled out Brannock and others for their bravery that day.

"I could've run up there and hugged [the judge]," Mandy Brannock said.

"I needed to hear it and I know [Matt] needed to hear it too," she said.

Matt Brannock said it made him feel better as well.

Agee received three life terms plus eleven years.
