Katherine Quiroz awarded scholarship from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

A Faith Christian School senior is heading to college with a pretty unique scholarship - The Gates Millennium Scholarship from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Senior Katherine Quiroz started the application process eight months ago with a pool of 54,000 applicants.

After writing a series of vigorous essays Katherine found out she was a finalist.

If you're wondering why, so many folks apply it might have something to do with how much money recipients are awarded.  Each person gets up to $350,000.

"This scholarship is known as America's last dollar scholarship, so basically that means where I choose to go to school whether it be private or public for further my education they're going to pay for everything through my PhD, so I'm super excited," explained Quiroz.

Katherine was so excited about finding out if she got the scholarship her mom stopped the mail to the house for a week, because she was going to be out of town and didn't want her daughter to find out alone.

Katherine is attending Christopher Newport University to get her master's in teacher and then she plans to get her PhD in education administration.
