Dawn Toole voted by the viewers at our Mother of May winner

Posted: Updated:

Dawn Toole was voted by the viewers at our Mother of May winner.

Dawn is a kindergarten teacher at Patrick Henry Elementary School in Martinsville.

With the help of school administration we surprised dawn after school Wednesday.

Dawn was nominated by her daughter, Madison, for her work at her church.

Dawn started a weekend backpack program for area students called Mercy Nuggets, so they'll have food to eat over the weekend.

She got the idea from a similar program at the school where she teaches and it broke her heart to see students get excited about having food to take home on the weekends, but the most exciting part of being a Mother of May finalist, she says, is the attention the contest has brought to Mercy Nuggets.

"I have had a lot of people within our community ask about it and we've also had a lot of people step up to volunteer, so that's exciting too is getting the word out about what we do," Dawn explained.

With all this attention she's hoping to grow the program next school year to reach more students in Southside.
