McGuire, Oliver Reunited at Radford

Posted: Updated:

Success isn't something that is unfamiliar to new Radford Women's basketball head coach Mike McGuire.  His resume consists of 2 back-to-back state title runs at Hidden Valley in 2007-2008…. As well as 5 years at the University of Richmond as an assistant coach.  And now that he is running his own college program, he gets to staff it.  And he has started with former Titan standout Abby Oliver.  Oliver has been brought on staff as the director of Basketball Operations for the program. The two have spent more than six and half years together and McGuire explains that he is sure what Oliver is all about by now. He called her someone with a rare work ethic and drive that leads to success.

And what Oliver is about is nothing short of doing everything she can do to help the team win.  Her senior year in high school she averaged 18.2 points doing the regular season, and 19.5 points per game in the post season. So coach knows first hand he has someone who he can count on when the pressure is on, and someone who respects how he calls the game.  Oliver says that McGuire has been a large reason for her success in the sport.

Another thing Oliver brings to the table is perspective.  Having played 4 years at the University of Richmond, she can relate to the girls she will be coaching. And after a full year off she can still get it done on the court too,  beating her coach in a quick game of horse.  But despite beating up on her boss on the court she's grateful for her first basketball job will take off under the coach that helped her become the great player we have all come to know.
