Blacksburg Farmer's Market benefits from solar panels

Posted: Updated:

A local farmer's market is reducing its energy consumption through a donation of solar panels.

The Blacksburg Farmer's Market recently expanded the number of solar panels that were originally put in when during renovation back in 2009. Solar Connexion donated the additional panels which more than doubled output. "It reduces their electric consumption and their need to pay the bill. Also, it's environmentally sound because it's green energy," said Solar Connexion's Bryan Walsh.

They create electricity for all the lights at the market, the receptacles, and street lights in the area around the park. Solar Connexion says the photovoltaic panels are becoming more and more popular.

It's something you can do at your own home to cut costs, Walsh said. "Building it into a new home is a little bit easier than adding it to an existing home but there's actually not a lot of difference between the two. It's pretty easy to get to a net zero so you can basically have no electric bill."

Walsh says more and more people are using them. He says in the last five years, his industry has expanded seven fold. In Virginia, he estimates there were four businesses doing what he does five to six years ago, now there are nearly 600.
