Group to discuss Wake Schools safety

Posted: Updated:
CARY, N.C. -

A task force set up to review and improve safety polices in the state's largest school district, return to work Thursday.

The meeting comes as the panel prepares to recommend how Wake County school campuses should react in the event of an emergency.

The school safety task force has already met a couple of times and will fine tune its recommendations Thursday.

Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison leads this task force made up of law enforcement, principals and teachers.

They first met in March, looking at the school district's emergency operations plan, security infrastructure and the staffing of sheriff school resource officers and private security.

They were given 90 days to recommend changes to the school system's emergency policies.

One idea they've discussed is developing a master security plan for all 169 schools.

The group will go over their recommendations Thursday and discuss their next steps.

Their 90 day deadline is up next month.

Thursday's meeting is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the school system offices in Cary.
