Roanoke's West End neighborhood getting $1.6 million in HUD improvements

Posted: Updated:

Roanoke's West End neighborhood is set to get more than $1.6 million in HUD money from the federal government for community improvements.

The amount will be finalized at the end of the city's budgetary process.

Roanoke City Council is set to officially adopt the 2013-14 budget soon.

The $1.6 million will be divvied up between Total Action Against Poverty, Habitat for Humanity, and Community Housing Partners among others.

The city will focus on building new homes and renovating old ones in the Old Southwest and Mountain View neighborhoods.

The plan is very similar to the one Roanoke used to significantly improve the Hurt Park neighborhood.

Habitat for example is currently working on five homes on Marshall, Day, and Rorer avenues.

WSLS 10's Scott Leamon will have more on this tonight at 6 p.m.
