VDOT releases 6 year plan for Southwest Virginia

SALEM -

VDOT has released its six year draft for Southwest Virginia and thanks to the transportation bill some new projects are getting much needed funding.

Here are some of the highlights of the plan:

VDOT would get more than $47 million over six years for paving projects on interstates and primary roads.

The agency would also get the needed money to replace the I-81 northbound bridge over the New River.

The total cost for that project is estimated at $78.1 million. However that project is still several years away.

As for something we could see much quicker $6.5 million will be set aside to adjust speed limits on I-77 over Fancy Gap Mountain in Carroll County based on weather.

Drivers have been calling for changes to I-77 after heavy fog helped cause a 95 car pile-up on Easter Sunday.

Bidding on that project could begin within the next few months.

VDOT would also get an additional $2.8 million to move along an improvement project in Montgomery County for the Ironto/Elliston Connector.

Since this is just a draft VDOT is looking for public input.

The agency will hold a public hearing June 4 at 6 p.m. at Northside High School in Roanoke County.

The final plan will be adopted before July 1.
