Raleigh rally against allowing gay scouts planned

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Rallies are planned throughout the country, including in Raleigh on Friday, in opposition to a resolution being considered by the Boy Scouts of America to allow gay scouts into the organization.

A group of parents, scout leaders and Eagle Scouts plan to rally at the Occoneechee Council to send a message to the national organization.

"I think, simply put, sex and politics don't have a place in the Boy Scouts," said Brad Kiser, a parent of a Cub Scout, and a member of the onmyhonor.net group opposing the resolution.

He opposes a resolution that the Boy Scouts of America's national council will vote on next week.

It would allow openly gay scouts, but not openly gay adults, in the organization.

"If the resolution passes, and our group hopes they vote 'no' on the resolution, but if the resolution passes, then we'll have to have a program with scouts as young as six years old about homosexuality and what that is and explain that we currently allow that in the Boy Scouts," Kiser said.

Kiser said the resolution is not thought out and needs more input from families and parents.

The vote is scheduled for next Thursday, May 23.

If it passes, it would go into effect in January, Kiser said.

There is support for the resolution. Nationally, a number of leaders and scouts have been kicked out after saying publicly they were gay, including Eagle Scout James Dale, who took the issue all the way to the Supreme Court, but lost.

"I think fair-minded Americans know that discrimination is wrong, and that the Boy Scouts were out of step with America by excluding gay young people and telling non-gay children that discrimination was an American value," Dale said.
