DURHAM, N.C. -

Governor Pat McCrory and Senator Kay Hagan toured the grand opening today of $72 million lab in Research Triangle Park.

Syngenta, a global biotechnology research company, has been building the Advanced Crop Lab in RTP for three years.

The company employs 27,000 worldwide and more than 1,100 North Carolina workers.

The RTP facility boasts 30 greenhouses equipped with cutting edge technology that will allow researchers to simulate crop conditions from Iowa in one room and from Africa right next to it. This will help researchers pinpoint the needs of all farmers. The goal is to learn how to grow more food from fewer resources.

North Carolina's agricultural industry employs one-fifth of workers in our state.

"We got some decent news today. Our unemployment in North Carolina...dropped below nine percent, barely. That's good news. But let me tell you, we've got a long way to go. And I'm convinced one of the ways we are going to get out of our recession is agriculture," McCrory said.

It is estimated farmers will have to double their crop output over the next 40 years to feed nine billion people by 2050. McCrory said North Carolina is a leader in helping solve the challenge of feeding growing populations.

"We all have to do more with less. The energy issue, government spending issue and of course the most important thing is – where do we get our food supply in the future? This is our future."
