RALEIGH, N.C. -

A deputy with the Wake County Sheriff's Office shot and killed a woman Friday afternoon south of Raleigh after she charged at him and two other deputies with a knife, authorities said.

Someone called 911 to report that a woman was breaking into a home at 6232 Melbourne Road. The suspect was threatening to kill the resident at that home with a garden rake, Jim Stevens with the Wake County Sheriff's Office said.

When law enforcement arrived at 11:55 a.m., they found a woman, identified as Misty Mullins, 33, breaking into a second home at 6222 Melbourne Road, Stevens said.

Responding law enforcement tried to talk Mullins out of the house. Deputies then learned Mullins was not supposed to be at the residence at 6222 Melbourne Road due to an domestic violence order against her.

Deputies entered the house and attempted to subdue Mullins with a stun gun as she charged at them with a knife or a machete.

When that failed, Deputy Gabriel Romero shot and killed Mullins, Stevens said.

Neighbors seem shocked something like this could happen here. "This is a quiet neighborhood...desperate times...it is what it is," next door neighbor Bob Scott said.

Romero is now on administrative duty, pending a State Bureau of Investigation review of the incident, which is standard protocol.

None of the responding deputies were injured.

Court documents show Misty Mullins was arrest twice in April at 6222 Melbourne Road. On April 25, she was charged with simple assault. She was arrested on April 29 and charged with injury to personal property.
