Greene Memorial UMC hosting "One Big Day of Serving"

Posted: Updated:

As we reported Thursday $1.6 million in federal grant money could go a long way towards creating more growth in the West End area of Roanoke.

This weekend you might see a number kids volunteering to kick start clean-up in that community.

It has a simple title - One Big Day of Serving.

Hundreds of students and volunteers will be out Saturday working on 24 different projects in the West End area of the city.

Youth group members at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church got the idea after volunteering in other communities.

Recognizing a need here in our back yard, six months ago the students started working with Roanoke City on finding some projects to help with.

For one student organizer the project hits home, while another organizer says they're just a small part of a bigger movement.

"It hits home for me, because my grandmother lives over there in that area and so we drive by there every time we visit her and so I've places you can look at and you can just be like oh I can go help over there," explained Arizona Murray, co-site coordinator.

"The whole purpose behind it is to hopefully get a million youth throughout the whole country doing something for their community to really make a difference," Debbie Brown said, Director of Program Ministries at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church.

Brown says they're looking for more volunteers to help with all of the service projects.

They're going to be doing yard work and sprucing up homes in the west end area.

If you're interested in helping out call Debbie Brown at 344-6225 or Arizona Murray 342-8413.
