How much money does your councilman make?

Posted: Updated:

After deciding to hold off on voting itself a pay raise, Roanoke City Council is asking for your opinion during a public hearing tonight.

WSLS 10 is taking a closer look at the raise city council is asking for and how it compares to other areas in Central and Southwest Virginia.

Roanoke City Councilmen currently make $15,560 per year while the mayor is paid $20,000 per year.

They're considering raises to $20,000 and $23,000 respectively.

If that raise is voted through, Roanoke City Council would make more than twice that of their counterparts in Lynchburg.

The Lynchburg City Council is paid $8,000 per year and the mayor is paid $10,000 per year.

Montgomery County and Roanoke County both have comparable populations to the Star City.

Montgomery County pays its Board of Supervisors $11,000 per year and its Board Chairman $12,800 per year.

Roanoke County pays its Board of Supervisors $17,083 per year and its Board Chairman $18,883.

But the eye opening numbers come from the Virginia State Capitol.

If the Roanoke City Council approves the raise, its salary would be higher than both the House of Delegates and State Senate.

Members of the House of Delegates make $17,640 per year while state senators make $18,000.

However, both state houses are given a per diem for every day they work in Richmond.

You make your voice heard on the possible pay raises at 7 p.m. at the Roanoke Council Chambers.

Council will vote on the possible pay increase at its June 3 meeting.
