Roanoke City Police are examining a potential DNA link to a cold case murder from 2005, WSLS 10 has confirmed.
On August 16, 2005, police found Jamie Penn, 23, dead of gunshot wounds in his SUV.
It was parked on the 1100 block of Thomas Avenue NW.
A search warrant on file in Roanoke Circuit Court claims investigators found a lighter near the SUV back in 2005 and bagged it as evidence.
In 2006, state forensic examiners pulled DNA off that lighter that did not match Penn, or anyone else at that time.
Then on April 25th, the search warrants reads, the DNA was retested and compared against a database that came up with a match.
Roanoke police collected a buccal swab from a man who matched the DNA that was found on the lighter.
No arrests have been made.
Police want to see if the DNA can further the investigation.
