ROANOKE, VA -

The economic impact of the Blue Ridge Marathon on the Roanoke Valley's economy, grew by a big leap in 2013.

According to a study by the Roanoke Regional Partnership, the race brought in a total of $476,000 to the local economy.  That number is a 26.3% increase over 2012 the partnership noted.

A post-race survey by the partnership found the marathon and half-marathon:

  • Created $295,678 in direct new sales activity
  • An additional $180, 691 from indirect and induced spending

"The races and the visitors they attract reinforce awareness of the Roanoke Region's outdoor amenities and reaffirm that our growing reputation as an outdoor destination leads to economic development," said Pete Eshelman, director of outdoor branding for the Roanoke Regional Partnership, in a news release.

The marathon drew 1,684 runners from 38 states, and four countries.  67% of runners were from Virginia.
