Roanoke woman honored as "Virginia Big of the Year"

ROANOKE, VA -

A Roanoke woman is named "Virginia Big of the Year" and is the first Big Brothers Big Sisters volunteer to ever win the honor from southwest Virginia.

Leslie Bennett and her little sister, Marsha, met for the first time three years ago, after a woman at work urged Leslie to volunteer.

While she's receiving state wide recognition for her efforts, she takes joy in the small victories of mentoring Marsha.

"We would go out to dinner sometimes and I would put my napkin in my lap and so I'd always kind of ask her where does your napkin go and so the first time we went out and she put her napkin in her lap I was like oh my gosh I taught her that," Leslie explained.

Leslie's positive attitude and hardworking approach to volunteering is why June House, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Virginia says when it came time to nominating someone for "Big of the Year" everyone involved agreed Leslie was it.
