Habitat for Humanity salvages appliances for Restore

Posted: Updated:
BLACKSBURG, VA -

Habitat for humanity volunteers are used to building homes but this week, they're tearing them down. "All of the appliances," said Habitat for Humanity New River Valley Executive Director Shelley Fortier. "We'll be taking screen doors, ceiling fans. We'll be taking electric circuit breakers and anything else we see along the way."

They call it an "unbuild," a first time demolish like this for habitat of the New River Valley. They're taking items from nearly 200 one, two and three story apartments at OakBridge in Blacksburg. The complex will be leveled when volunteers are done and a new one built, The Edge, in its place. "When you think about 200 apartments being demolished, Fortier said. "It could be a lot so we're going to keep what we can and lighten up the load for the demo team."

The load will be moved to Habitat's ReStore and sold to raise money to build homes for low income families across the NRV. "It's an alternate way in the community for people to give rather than pulling out the checkbook," Fortier said.

Master gardeners are also there pulling up plants to transplant at existing Habitat homes. Volunteers will work through Monday and can use more help. You can call Habitat for Humanity of the New River Valley to sign up.
