Unique Staycations: Wild times at Wilderness Adventure

Posted: Updated:

All this week, WSLS 10 is taking you inside several unique destinations right here in our backyard.  This time, we're going off the beaten path to a 500 acre outdoor playground in New Castle.

Taking a break from the urban jungle to spend time in the forests of Southwest Virginia, this week a group of students from New Orleans are on an adventure at Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing -- rafting, team building, and flying through the air on a zip line.  They're just one of many groups the park will show what having fun in the great outdoors is all about.

"His vision was to make a place where people could come and get away from the city, away from town, and head out into nature," said Julia Boas, Director of Programs at Wilderness Adventure.  "Then spend exclusive time there exploring and doing a variety of adventure activities."

"He" is Colonel Gene Nervo, a retired U.S. Marine who opened the 500 acre park more than 20 years ago.  It started as youth backpack camp, where kids and teens could learn how to tough it out in nature -- then go out and put those skills to use doing things like mountain biking, rock climbing, caving, kayaking, camping, and more.  That's still their bread and butter.

"This is our version of summer camp, but it's not a traditional camp," said Boas.  "They're going to go off on a trip where they get to travel to all the best places in Virginia and West Virginia and to all the different natural resources that we have in our area."

Today, however, Wilderness Adventure is a year-round facility that caters to people and groups of all ages, hosting corporate retreats, family reunions, weddings, adult skill clinics, weekend getaways, and even craft beer tastings.  The property itself has lodges, dining services, ponds, ropes courses, team building arenas, and a 900 foot long zip line.

"Pretty much anything you can think of or any activity or group you want to bring out here, we'll customize everything and cater it to your needs," said Boas.

The one thing that hasn't changed though is the mission.

"Unplugging is really important, especially these days," said Boas.  "And then just being able to appreciate how beautiful it is in the Blue Ridge Mountains and out in nature in general."

Wilderness Adventure is located off of Route 615 in New Castle and is open 365 days a year.  While they primarily work with larger groups, they say families, couples, and small groups are welcome as well.  Prices and times vary depending on the types of activities you want to do.  For more information, visit their website: http://www.wilderness-adventure.com
