Vinton robbery leads to Roanoke County schools lockdown

VINTON, VA -

11:30 a.m.

A Roanoke County Schools spokesman tells us they are currently in the process of lifting the lockdown at William Byrd High School and Middle School.

The official time of the lockdown lift will be 11:35 a.m.

Roanoke County Schools also says there will be an increased police presence throughout the day, and that all this was done as a precaution based on information from Roanoke County police. 

Students were at no time in any danger.

10:45 a.m.

WSLS 10's Erin Barnett is on scene and reports that Roanoke Co. Police says both schools are still on lockdown as a precaution.

There was a robbery at a tobacco shop on the 2400 block of Washington Ave. in Vinton.

Police are still looking for the suspect, who ran away from the scene.

He's described as a white male, at about 5 feet, 8 inches tall and appears to be in his 20s.

10:21 a.m.

A Roanoke County Schools spokesman tells WSLS that both William Byrd Middle School and William Byrd High School have been placed on lockdown after the advice of Roanoke County Police that a suspicious person in the area.

The lockdown started around 10 a.m. this morning.

Police say it is a "precautionary measure."
