Saturday, May 25

  • Chapel VFW will gather at 7 a.m. at the Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetary to put large flags on each marked veterans grave. This will be followed a ceremony at 8 a.m. at the cemetery plaza.

Monday, May 27

  • Chapel Hill VFW joins the American Legion and other local veterans and service groups at the Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery for an 8 a.m. Memorial Service.
  • American Legion Chapel Hill Post 6 will hold an open house at 10 a.m. with a memorial service at 11 a.m. Iwo Jima survivor Major Everett "Bud" Hampton will speak at the service.
  • Veterans & Victims of War: Past, Present & Future annual Memorial Day commemoration at Carrboro Town Commons at 2 p.m. The event features a proclamation by Carrboro Mayor Mark Chilton, readings, poetry, Raging Grannies singing songs for peace and justice, and remarks by Howard Machtinger on the 30th anniversary of the end of the war in Vietnam

Durham

Saturday, May 25

  • Memorial Day Remembrance: The United States Military Through the Ages at Bennett Place State Historic Site. Join military living historians representing the American soldier of all time periods with a "United States Military Through the Ages." Program is from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., admission is free and donations are graciously accepted.

Sunday, May 26

  • Memorial Day Remembrance: The United States Military Through the Ages at Bennett Place State Historic Site. Join military living historians representing the American soldier of all time periods with a "United States Military Through the Ages." Program is from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., admission is free and donations are graciously accepted.
  • Lowe's Grove Baptist Church will hold a memorial service in its cemetery at 11 a.m. It will honor those who served in the military and remember members of the church family who have died since Memorial Day 2012.
  • Sanctuary United Methodist Church at Lakewood will observe Memorial Day with a special service at 2 p.m. Sunday at the church, 2317 Chapel Hill Road in Durham. Veterans are encouraged to wear their awards and decorations.

Monday, May 27

  • The Pauli Murray Project will hold a Memorial Day observance at 10 a.m. Monday at the Fitzgerald Family Cemetery to honor Union Army and Navy veteran Robert G. Fitzgerald, the grandfather of Murray, an Episcopal saint.
  • Next Level Veterans Outreach Campus will hold a Memorial Day observance and open house at 11 a.m. Monday at 1107 Holloway St., Durham. U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield is the guest speaker.
  • American Legion Post 7 will hold a Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. at Maplewood Cemetery. Post Legionnaires, Ladies Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion will participate in the service. The guest speaker will be Vietnam veteran Perry Ball.
  • VFW Henry Seeman Post 2740 will hold a Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery.
  • Veterans For Peace will hold a commemoration of poetry, prose and song at 7 p.m. at the Regulator Bookshop.

  • The 82nd Airborne Division War Memorial Museum presents a three-day Living History Weekend that spans 1917 to 1999. 31 Day Salute is a month-long celebration of performances, ceremonies, exhibits and activities.
  • Spring Lake Memorial Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial. Light Refreshments will be served immediately following the ceremony.

Sunday, May 26

  • The 82nd Airborne Division War Memorial Museum presents a three-day Living History Weekend that spans 1917 to 1999. 31 Day Salute is a month-long celebration of performances, ceremonies, exhibits and activities.
  • Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra and the US Army Ground Forces Band presents "A Symphonic Salute to the US Armed Forces" at 7:30 p.m. at Festival Park.

  • Rep. David Price (D-NC) will attend a Memorial Day ceremony at Freedom Memorial Park at 10 a.m.

  • Stars, Stripes and Celebration at Marbles Kids Museum. Welcome back summer and celebrate the USA with Memorial Day play featuring a star-spangled dance party, fireworks painting, rocket science and more from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
  • The Memorial Day wreath-laying ceremony will be conducted by the Tar Heel Detachment #733, Marine Corps League at 11 a.m. at the State Capitol in downtown Raleigh.
  • Garner VFW Post 10225 will hold a Memorial Day service at 11:15 a.m. at Montlawn Cemetery and Memorial Gardens.
  • Historic Oakwood Cemetery will hold a ceremony of tribute to our deceased veterans who have served this country at 4:00 p.m. The 45-minute ceremony will feature keynote speaker Scott Waddle, former US Navy Commander of the USS Greeneville, a fast attack submarine.
  • Summerfield North Neighborhood Association is holding its annual Memorial Day Parade. The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m.
