DURHAM, N.C. -

Competitors in Durham made a marathon effort early Saturday morning to participate in a race that included stops to eat.

We're talking cupcakes, frozen fruit bars, hotdogs smothered in all the fix-in's and plenty of other foods you wouldn't associate with a road race.

It's called the Doughman Race. Officially, it's considered a team relay quadraphonic, which combines competitive eating with elements of a traditional triathlon.

It requires an early start and a sense of humor, too. Many participants dressed up in wacky and unique costumes for the event.

But, all the face stuffing and costumed fun was for a good cause. Every year the Doughman raises money for a needy Durham organization.

"We are here today raising money for the Hub Farm project at Durham Public Schools which is an amazing outdoor learning environment," said Emily Egge, one of several who helped organize the race back in 2008.

In the last half dozen years, the annual Doughman Race has raised $110,000 for various other charities in and around the Durham area. And folks love eating their way to kindness.

"Rather than have some boring charity, give money, and buy the plate; everyone runs, has a great time. Looks a little goofy and has great fun," said runner Whit Hanson.

Organizers say The Durham Hub Farms project should net at least $25,000 from this year's race.
