Pregnant mom and son, age 3, die when speed boat rips a hole in their watercraft

HIGH ROCK LAKE, NC -

Authorities have released the names of the mother and child killed when two boats collided on High Rock Lake in Davidson County.

 Investigators say 3-year-old William Britt died at the hospital a short time after the crash around 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

His 32-year-old mother, Melissa Britt, who was ejected from the boat during the collision, was found dead in the lake a few hours later.

 Authorities say the mother and son were on a pontoon boat that was hit by a powerboat. A third person on the pontoon boat suffered serious injuries.

Meanwhile, the driver of the speed boat, Michael Greene, 52, of McLeansville was not injured in the crash, WFMY reported.

Authorities initially responded to the scene for a search-and-rescue mission around 12:30 p.m. Saturday, according to Davidson County Communications.

 Investigators plan to meet with prosecutors in a few days to determine if any charges should be filed.

 Officials say the powerboat was going well over 25 mph in a shallow portion of the lake near Linwood.
