Mobile farmer's market makes farm to table easier

ROANOKE, VA -

You know the benefits of eating local but the reality of shopping local farms can be a tough sell.

"Finding the time to access products is not accessible for a lot of people if you have to go to six different farms to get your milk at one, your eggs at the other your cheese at the other and your vegetables at the other, very few people are tooled to do that in their daily schedule," said vegetable farmer Tenley Weaver.

That's where Weaver's program Good Food - Good People" comes in. "Our whole goal is to make it easy, palatable, friendly, convenient to get the right kind of food and also to support the right kind of business."

Weaver makes farm to table possible for a lot of people by bringing products from 50 different local growers closer to them. "It's perfect," said Emilie Biddle who works at Carilion Roanoke Memorial. "I just have to pick it up on my way out of work on my way home." Carilion is one of seven stops on the mobile market. Its Farmer's Table is open to the public but Carilion makes it easier for its employees to take advantage.

Employees sign up before the season to take part in the community supported agriculture program and use payroll deduction to pay for it. Every Thursday for 26 weeks, they pick up their share, a variety of vegetables pre-packaged in a box and fruit. "They kind of get the cream of the crop," Weaver said. "What comes along every week from our growers in a 100 mile radius."

You can also buy a la carte or simply email or call ahead for what you want. "Some people like to order products ahead of time so they know they have their pork loin waiting for them or they know is they come late to market, we won't be sold out of eggs," she said. It's access to farm fresh food where it's convenient for you.
