UNC 4th, Duke 8th in sports program rankings

Posted: Updated:

The University of North Carolina is fourth and Duke University is eighth in the latest Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Standings, released by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Thursday.

Duke had been 19th in the previous standings but shot up the rankings thanks to its women's golf team finishing second nationally and it's men's lacross team winning the NCAA title.

North Carolina also got a big boost from the women's lacrosse team, which won the national title.

The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's national finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 women's and 10 men's.

Stanford University leads the Director's Cup, with the University of Michigan second.

N.C. State is 38th.

UNC finished eighth overall last year, Duke 16th and N.C. State 37th.

N.C. State has steadily moved up in the standings in recent years as athletics director Debbie Yow has sought to improve the Wolfpack sports program across the board. In the final 2009 standings, for example, NCSU ranked a mere 74th in the Director's Cup standings.

That put State behind Yale (70th that year) and Harvard (73rd) and barely ahead of Middle Tennessee State (76th) and Northern Iowa (78th).
