APEX, N.C. -

Could the government be checking your phone records? Maybe. The NSA has been secretly collecting the telephone records of millions of Verizon customers under a top secret court order.

Government officials have been defending the practice saying it goes back to the Bush administration and the Patriot Act.

"The world has changed," security expert James Reese, of Apex, said. "We cant just sit back and believe that the oceans are going to protect us anymore."

He continued, "The bottom line is it's a good thing. It's helping protect our country. However, our government needs to do this absolutely correct."

Meaning, protecting consumer data it collects and following laws in place that limit interrogation unless they have a real reason to go after you.

Reese, who is CEO of TigerSwan, Inc., says the phone surveillance is likely not limited to Verizon -- all other carriers are likely a part of this too.

"They are running the data against known or suspected terrorist activity," he said.

He said that if you aren't a person of interest, your data is eventually discarded. None the less, around the Triangle, plenty people were skeptical about the intrusion.

"That's not fair," said one Cary woman. She joked, "Unless they are going to pay your phone bill."

The White House disagrees, saying this is a critical tool to fight security threats.
