Neighbors honor Roanoke World War II veteran with flag pole

Posted: Updated:

As we mark the 69th Anniversary of D-Day a World War II veteran got one of the biggest surprises in his life over Memorial Day weekend.

Jerome "Jerry" Howard came out on his front porch to find a donated flag pole, a brand new American flag, and members of the Franklin County ROTC in his front yard.

Contractor James Barton stopped by to introduce himself to the former Marine.

James actually donated the flag pole and his time putting it up.

"I just couldn't believe it, you know, what an honor that was bestowed upon me and I was just speechless.  I said I didn't do anything, I'm not a hero," explained Howard.

"I'm a very patriotic person and we've done several flag poles throughout the years, but it's not so much the flag pole itself it's the meaning behind it and the cause behind it," Barton said.

Howard says he's not a hero but it's pretty clear by the show of support others would disagree.
