Virginia State Police are investigating the cause of a two-car crash in Campbell County that left one person dead and three others hurt.

The crash occurred Friday afternoon on Route 501 near Molly Church Road.

A 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling southbound on Route 501 when it swerved to the left to avoid running into a breaking vehicle in front of it.

When it swerved, it crossed the lane and struck a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu heading northbound.

The driver of the Tahoe, Deprincia Burford, 28, of Monroe, Va. Burford and her passenger, Matthew Elam, 30, of Campbell County, were transported the Lynchburg General Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

 The driver of the Malibu, Terry Cockran, 47, of Thaxton, Va., and passenger, David N. Hubbard, 52, of Campbell County, were transported to Lynchburg General Hospital.

Hubbard was declared dead at the hospital. Cockran was later transferred to Roanoke for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

 Burford was charged with reckless driving. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
