Dunn man dies when train hits his pickup

Posted: Updated:
DUNN, N.C. -

A Dunn man trying to free his pickup from railroad tracks was hit and killed by a train Saturday night in Dunn.

The State Highway Patrol identified the victim as Andrew Williams, 59.

The patrol says the wreck happened at a crossing that was barricaded because of roadwork on Arrowhead Road.

According to the patrol, Williams drove around the barricades and was trying to cross the tracks when his truck's wheels dropped into the ruts in the construction area and the truck got hung up on the tracks.

Williams and a passenger had jacked up the front of the truck and were trying to maneuver it off the tracks when a CSX freight train arrived shortly before 9 p.m., the patrol said.

Williams' passenger called out to him and he jumped out of the truck, but it was too late for him to avoid being hit.

The passenger was not injured.
