McCrory to lead trade mission to India

Posted: Updated:
CARY, N.C. -

Gov. Pat McCrory identified India as one of the next major economic links to help boost the state's economy.

The governor and his staff are planning a first-ever trade mission to the country.

McCrory received a warm welcome at the SV Temple of North Carolina in Cary, the first governor in years to attend the annual celebration of the Indian-American community, organizers said.

McCrory met with Hari Nath, one of those organizers, who is also on the UNC Board of Governors. Nath said the two agreed that the governor and his commerce secretary would attempt the major trade mission sometime in the new year.

"The governor is interested in economic growth for the state," Nath said. "One way to do that is to bring corporations from India."

Nath says he and the governor agreed there needs to be economic commitments on both sides before the trip takes place. But he says a growing Indian community in the Triangle can help the state's bottom line.

"We have a lot of indian businessmen -- entrepreneurs in pharmaceuticals, biotech, IT -- they have connections in India."

The governor's office stressed no date has been set for the trip and planning is in the early stages.
