NC couple arrested for visiting water park, leaving Chihuahua in car

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -

Two North Carolina residents were arrested over the weekend after police said they left a small dog inside a hot vehicle with the windows opened about an inch.

According to a Myrtle Beach police report, an officer found a small Chihuahua left inside a black Chevy truck at the Myrtle Waves Water park Saturday afternoon.

The dog was suffering what the officer claimed to be heat stroke symptoms and was panting heavily and not able to hold himself up before the door was opened.

The temperature outside at the time was 87 degrees with a heat index of 92 degrees. The temperature inside the vehicle was 113 degrees, the officer said.

The officer put the dog in his patrol car with the air conditioner running on "full blast" and cooled him down with water.

Police had the water park staff page the owners to come to the parking lot.

Patricia Aguilar De Los Santos, 36, and Juan Medina-Torres, 23, both of Weaverville, N.C., were arrested and charged with mistreatment of animals.
