Vinton expects cigarette tax hike to raise $150,000

VINTON -

Tighter budgets for local governments mean some of you could be shelling out more money for a pack of cigarettes.

Both Vinton and Salem increased their cigarette tax this spring, saying that its needed to help with budget shortfalls.

Monday night Salem raised its tax from 20 cents to 45 cents per pack.

Two weeks ago Vinton raised its cigarette tax from 20 to 35 cents per pack.

Vinton Mayor Brad Grose estimates the increase could raise an additional $150,000 in the first year, which the town will put toward improvement projects.

"As citizens we all pay various taxes, so I don't think we are singling out any particular group," he said. "Those of us that eat out a lot in Vinton, we have a prepared meals tax. If you have real estate you have a tax."

Grose said this is not a temporary increase for Vinton, adding that it's unlikely the tax will be changed again in the next few years.
