Roanoke Police investigating suspicious package downtown

Posted: Updated:

10:35 update:  The roads are reopened. Sgt. Jason Holt with Roanoke Police said there were a bunch of industrial batteries and wires taped together in a dumpster. Someone saw it and called police. Police say there is no threat; they took the item with them to keep investigating. They don't know yet where the item came from.

Original Post:

The Roanoke Police Department is investigating a "suspicious package" found in a dumpster along Campbell Ave SE Wednesday morning.  As a result, multiple roads in the area have been blocked off.

Police spokesperson Sgt. Jason Holt says a citizen called 911 to report the item just after 7:45 Thursday morning.  He did not offer more specifics on the item but says it was found in the 800 block of Campbell Ave and the Virginia State Police Explosive Detection Unit has been called in to respond.

Campbell Ave has been shut down between the 500 and 900 blocks.  Tazewell Ave has also been blocked off at 8th St and 8 1/2 St.

WSLS Reporter Erin Brookshier is on the scene.  She tells us Norfolk Southern has not been evacuated, but that other surrounding buildings have.

We will continue to bring you updates as they become available.
