WSLS 10 has learned Roanoke city is in talks with the state that could save city taxpayers $3 million on a culvert project in relation to bringing passenger rail to Roanoke.

The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation is considering working with the city and other principles involved to pick up half the tab on the expected $6 million culvert repair project.

The culvert, which runs beneath the Norfolk Southern railyard in downtown Roanoke, must be updated as part of the multi-million dollar deal with the state to bring passenger trains back to the Star City.
