Virginia Tech's Center for the Arts a draw for Blacksburg too

BLACKSBURG, VA -

Crews are hard at work in Blacksburg putting the finishing touches on the new Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech. Ruth Waalkes, the Center's executive director, spent some time inside earlier this week.

"They've started to put in the seating in the performance hall and it's a pretty big milestone in terms of a theater, often that's one of the last things that happens and it is just amazing," said Walkes

Waalkes says the facility which will have its grand opening in late October, will not only hold a 1,260 seat theater, but there will also be a mix of classrooms and research labs.

"It's not a classroom building or an academic building in any traditional sense. We have the studio spaces in there where our research faculty will be working with students and with guest artists and with other researchers," said Waalkes.

According to university leaders, they are hopeful the Center for the Arts will not just be a place for students going to school there and faculty working there, but also a place that people living in Blacksburg and who call it home, will embrace as well.

"We are counting on the public from the region here to come in and participate in programs whether those are performances that are happening on stage, or workshops and residencies that we are doing."

Just another way Virginia Tech and the people of Blacksburg are working together and building a stronger foundation for the future.
