Virginia State Police are investigating a deadly crash that killed two people south of Bedford on Wednesday evening, June 12th.

According to State Police spokeswoman Deborah Cox, the crash took place around 7:15 p.m. at the intersection of Joppa Mill Road and Route 122.

When the investigating trooper arrived at the scene, they found a Plymouth Breeze was driving east on Joppa Mill Road, and failed to stop at a stop sign.  The Plymouth drove into the path of a Chevrolet 1500 pick-up truck going north on Route 122.

The pick-up hit the passenger side of the Plymouth, and then the truck flipped.

The impact sent the Chevy's driver, 75-year-old David R. Howe, of Graham, North Carolina, flying from the truck.  He was not wearing a seatbelt, and later died at Lynchburg General Hospital.

EMTs airlifted a passenger in the pick-up truck, 71-year-old Pearl M. Howe, of Graham, N.C., to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.  She was wearing her seatbelt, and suffered serious injuries.

EMTs took a passenger in the Plymouth, 22-year-old Elizabeth M. Wilson, of Pillager, Minnesota, to Bedford Memorial Hospital.  She was wearing a seatbelt, but died from her injuries.

The driver of the Plymouth, 20-year-old Mariah K. Skalka, of Bedford, was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, and is expected to recover.  She was wearing a seatbelt.

State Police charged Skalka with reckless driving.

The State Police accident reconstruction team is helping with the investigation.
