Wythe County Sheriff's Office warns of ATM & Lifeline scams

Posted: Updated:
WYTHE COUNTY, VA -

Wythe County Sheriff's Office news release

We have two scams currently being perpetrated in Wythe and some surrounding counties that we would like to bring to the attention of the public.

We have identified a suspect who has approached county residents, along with some surrounding county residents, with an offer to invest in ATM machines.  The suspect will actually pay small amounts of "interest" to the victims but eventually absconds with the money.   We have the suspect in custody but feel that there is a strong probability that other victims exist.  If any area resident have been approached with a proposal to invest in ATM machines we would like them to call our office. If out of area citizens have been approached contact your local law enforcement officials.

We some senior residents of the county who have received phone calls from the 434 area code and approached by a person who identifies himself as a representative of Lifeline.  The caller tells the resident that a family member has paid for Lifeline and tries to schedule an appointment to do an installation.   Lifeline has verified that they have no representative in the 434 area and that they are aware of a scam being perpetrated from that area code.
