Roanoke and Salem Relay for Life begins tonight

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE, VA -

Two relays will take place tonight to benefit one cause.

The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life in Roanoke and Salem both kick off tonight at the Reserve Avenue athletic fields and Salem High School.

Activities begin at 5:00 p.m. and the opening ceremonies start at 7:00 p.m. There will be activities throughout the night and into Saturday morning. Participants say one of the most moving tributes is the lighting of the luminaria.

The candles in each paper bag represents a person. Each one will be lit after dark tonight. "It's our way of having a time to remember those that we have lost due to cancer," said volunteer Debbie Brown. "And those that have won the battle at this time with cancer. We are able to light those and that light goes out into the world that hey, you're still in our hearts and for the survivors, we support you fully."

You can still dedicate a luminaria at relay tonight and participate in all the activities. You can find more information and a schedule of events here.
