CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

A 20-year-old UNC student died Thursday when a tree fell on her on Franklin Street during the severe storm system that came through the Triangle.

Xuezhou Nan, of Cary, was a senior at UNC-Chapel Hill. Nan, who was known as Julia to friends and faculty, was fatally struck by a falling tree in the 300 block of East Franklin Street.

"It is so hard to lose one so young, especially in such a terrible, random and tragic event," Chancellor Holden Thorp said in a statement. "I hope that all of you, Julia's fellow Tar Heels, will keep her family and friends in your thoughts at this sad time."

According to officials, the Chapel Hill Fire Department, Chapel Hill Police and the OCES were dispatched to the scene at 5:19 p.m. and arrived on scene at 5:24 p.m.

Emergency Medical Services Director Jim Groves says another person pulled Nan from beneath the tree but she was unresponsive. Nan arrived at the UNC Hospital Emergency Room at 5:32 p.m. where she was pronounced dead.

Counseling resources are being made available to the students most immediately affected by her death.

Students who feel they need assistance may call Counseling and Wellness Services at (919) 966-2281 during regular operating hours. Employees may contact the Employee Assistance Program at (877) 314-5841.

Nan graduated from Panther Creek High School in 2011.

Two Wilkes County residents also died, including a volunteer firefighter who was electrocuted after responding to a small fire caused by a tree that fell onto power lines.

Wilkes County Fire Marshal Kevin Bounds says 36-year-old Tony Barker had joined the Mountain View Volunteer Fire Department last year. Fire Chief Bill Johnson said Barker had a wife and a 3-year-old son.

Authorities say 77-year-old Maurice Kilby of Wilkes County died when a large tree fell on him in his yard. Officials say Kilby's wife found him and called for help, but he had died by the time rescuers arrived.
