SANFORD, N.C. -

A Sanford woman was charged Wednesday with killing her husband, but her children say there is more to the story.

Police charged 41-year-old Izora Murchison with first degree murder.  A search warrant shows Murchison admitted to police that she had stabbed her husband in the chest and killed him.  45-year-old Samuel Bernard Murchison died at the scene.

The couple's children, however, say police have it all wrong.

Although they grieve the loss of their father, they say after years of physical and emotional abuse, Izora was acting in self-defense.  Police had been called to the home in the 700 block of Lawrence Street multiple times in the past for allegations of assault.

"She's not a murderer," Briuna Murchison, Izora's daughter, said. "Everyone who knows my mother knows she's the sweetest woman in the world and would do anything for anybody."

But other family members say the murder charge is appropriate, noting that no one besides the couple was home to witness what actually happened.

The victim's aunt tells WNCN she had just spoken with him on Monday about his ongoing marriage problems.

"And I just said to him, Bernard, if there's no love, if there's no respect, you need to get out of it before somebody gets hurt," Anne McKoy said.

Unlike the children, McKoy wants Murchison to pay for killing her nephew.

"I'm praying that justice prevails," McKoy said.  "We know that it will come out exactly what happened."

Meanwhile, the couple's children are suddenly left without parents.

"It will be an empty part inside of me," Samuel Murchison Jr. said,  "to know I can't see either of my parents ever again."

Murchison's next court date is scheduled for July 3 in Lee County.
