Bedford County Father of June finalist survived grenade attack in Vietnam War

Posted: Updated:

Our fourth Fathers of June finalist, Wayne Dooley, is a Vietnam War hero and a hero to his daughter.

Wayne shows us the case his wife, Shirley, put together to display all of his military honors.

He served on the front lines for 12 months, risking his life for our freedom.

Wayne says he didn't talk about his service for years even though the three Bronze Stars and Purple Heart that sit in this case are proof he's a hero.

"I feel like I don't deserve anything.  I feel like the good lord everything I got and if wasn't for him I wouldn't be nothing," Wayne said.

"To ask him he would never tell you what all he's done and he is definitely my hero."

Wayne earned a purple heart when he survived a grenade explosion and still managed to keep fighting.

Tina said she knew she was going to nominate her dad for our Fathers of June contest before we had even announced it.
