Relay for Life kicks off in Roanoke

Posted: Updated:

Hand in hand and arm in arm, thousands of people walked on the athletic fields in Roanoke for Relay for Life.

"I'm a five year survivor," Lauren Bush says.

Lauren Bush was just five years old when she was diagnosed with cancer. She says being a part of the event helps her not feel so alone.

"It's cool to meet other people who have dealt with things I have dealt with," Bush says.

Lauren's mother, Julie Gillium, is one of the organizers. She says she couldn't be more proud of her daughter.

"Tonight is a night to celebrate and a night to remember those who lost the battle and it's a night to get geared up to keep fighting and fight this disease and we want to see a cure in our generation," Relay for Life chair person, Julie Gillium says.

While, behind this smile, is a woman who's endured enough challenges for a life time.

Sharon Guacheta can say she's been cancer free for 46 years.

She says coming to 'Relay for Life' in Roanoke gives hope to her and anyone who's been affected by cancer.

"It's good to know you're not going through things by yourself," cancer survivor, Sharon Guacheta says.

Many of the survivors we met at relay for life have positive attitudes like Carol Reynolds, who's been cancer free almost thirty three years.

"Everyone should come out here because it's fun, it's encouraging, and it's just a beautiful, beautiful thing," cancer survivor Carol Reynolds says.

At last check the group had raised more than $200,000.
