Lane of I-95 in northeastern NC closing for 2 days

RALEIGH, N.C. -

One lane of Interstate 95 South at the Halifax-Nash county line is closing to allow for bridge work.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation says the lane will be closed from 7 a.m. Monday until 7 p.m. Tuesday as crews complete work on an expansion joint on the bridge over Fishing Creek. Expansion joints allow a bridge to expand and contract with the weather.

The work is part of a larger project to renovate 13 bridges on or over I-95 in northeastern North Carolina.

A $2.9 million contract was awarded in May 2012 to extend the life of the 13 bridges in Halifax, Nash and Northampton counties.

Crews use intense water pressure to remove old concrete, then apply new concrete or epoxy overlay to the bridge deck.
